Mallorquin wine should not be left out of the wine list in the gourmet restaurants on the Island of Mallorca. Some good wines such as the Amina Negra are of such high quality that they have already won international prizes.
Mallorca has a longstanding tradition in wine production
Wine has been cultivated for centuries on Mallorca. At the beginning of the 13th century King Jaime succeeded in promoting winegrowing. The Island’s wines gained international recognition in the 15th century. The Balearic Islands benefited from the phylum that destroyed the well-known wine-growing areas in France in the 19th century, because then the wines were suddenly highly in demand. But then the plague also reached Mallorca and destroyed the vineyards. Thus almond trees and olive trees were planted. In the 1960s winegrowing increased with tourism.
Binissalem is the capital of Mallorca’s wine-making industry
Quality wines were gradually made. Binissalem received the first quality award as a wine-growing region. Additional wine-growing areas are Pla i Llevant and Serra de Tramuntana – Costa Nord.
Altogether 45,000 hectolitres of Mallorcan wine are produced on a total area of about 2300 hectares. 80% make red wines.
The main vine variety of the island is the native Manto Negro
Grape varieties like the native Mantonegro are often mixed with international tops. Thus, the quality of the wines is increased.
