PROPERTIES IN S’ARRACÓ

In the center of the village there are beautifully designed village houses, which decorate the townscape with their imposing entrance portals, towers, columns and sandstone elements. Trees and bouganvillas, which grow on the facades of the houses, give the villagescape a colorful sight next to the blue sky. Most of these village houses, some of which have also been divided into apartments, have lush patios or gardens. On the outskirts of the village are authentic fincas with natural stone facades and large plots, often with pool. The properties in S’Arracó reflect the original Mallorcan and Mediterranean charm of Mallorca.

Apartments in communal complexes with garden and pool, holiday resorts or similar are not to be found in S’Arracó.

The supply of properties in S’Arracó that are for sale is usually limited and the prices relatively high – about € 400,000 for a luxurious village house and with at least € 1 million for a rustic finca.

The following buildings of S’Arracó are worth mentioning:

  • Ses Monges, the old school currently used as a cultural centre
  • the church of Sant Crist
  • The four ancient estates: Son Guillem, Son Joan, Son Castel, l Son Nadal

The village church of San Cristo consists of a small nave divided into four arches and flanked by three chapels. Inside there is a Baroque altarpiece dedicated to Christ and another altarpiece of the Virgin, the Mare de Deu de la Trapa. On Saturdays there is a small market opposite the church.

Furthermore, mills, small casitas and fincas as well as bucket wheels characterize the townscape of S’Arracó. They are vivid reminders of the small village’s agricultural past.

SPORTS AND LEISURE IN S’ARRACÓ

Water sports are also very popular due to the ideal wind and weather conditions on the southwest coast of the Balearic Islands. Whether windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing or diving, the beaches near S’Arracó are perfect for water sports enthusiasts.

For sailing enthusiasts, the exclusive yacht club of Port d’Andratx is at their disposal.

NIT DE L’ART – THE NIGHT OF THE ARTS

The Mallorcan village of S’Arracó is transformed into an open museum for artists and art enthusiasts during the Nit de l’Art in July. All forms of artistic and cultural expression are welcome at this annual event, which brings together the work of various artists from around the world, including paintings, sculptures and photography.

During Art Nights, the Town Hall of Andratx offers a free bus service every 30 minutes between the towns of Sant Elm and S’Arracó.

HISTORY AND CULTURE OF S’ARRACÓ

The place name S’Arracó comes from the Arabic “ar racon”, which means “corner”. The village once belonged to an area that stretched from the small coastal town of St. Elm to the monastery “Sa Trapa” and including the island of Sa Dragonera.

Mallorca’s warring families, who call themselves “Ara Connors”, were responsible for the bloody history of the region, which is also marked by a striving for independence of the Andratx community.

Pirates who had settled on the island of Dragonera also attacked the area. Among them was even the infamous “Barbarossa”.

The crisis in the wood and soap industry caused waves of immigration to Cuba and France. With the prosperity that the emigrants from the Mallorcan town of S’Arracó in France got hold of, they built houses and fincas on their return to Mallorca. The main street of the village was thus named “Calle França” in honor of France.

Today, S’Arracó is home to a cosmopolitan community that, far from the tourism boom, appreciates rural tranquility and at the same time seeks easy access to Palma.
