The fishing village of Sant Elm with about 400 inhabitants is also known as San Telmo and belongs to the municipality of Andratx. It is located on a rugged stretch of coast in the southwest of Mallorca and borders the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. Sant Elm can be reached via a pine-lined serpentine road either from Andratx or the village  of S’Arracó. Water sports enthusiasts come by boat or by water taxi from Port d’Andratx.

Sant Elm has several coves and beaches

The idyllic coastal town of Sant Elm, which also includes the beautiful sandy beaches of Playa de San Telmo, is in a sheltered bay in the extreme southwest of Mallorca. From here you can directly see the island of Sa Dragonera, a nature reserve, and a popular destination for boat trips. The beach and the former fishing village are surrounded by the wooded foothills of the Tramuntana mountains.

With a length of 130 meters, Playa de San Telmo is a small but fine sandy beach. At the southern end of the fine-grained beach there is an artificial rock and concrete surface for sunbathing, followed by another small sandy bay. Sant Elm also offerscountless beautiful rocky bays and an ideal beach for those who prefer a short break away from the busy tourist beaches.

Every morning fishing boats depart from the small port of San Telmo. From the beach and the surrounding restaurants and cafes you have  spectacular views of the bay, the island of Sa Dragonera and the nearby island of Es Pantaleu.   In the summer months, the town is also characterized by a variety of boats and yachts anchored off the islands of Dragonera, Pantaleu and Sa Mitjana.

The beautiful pedestrian area of Sant Elm offers something for everyone. Things to do in San Telmo

Hiking is very popular in the area, not only because of the stunning coastal scenery, but also because of the natural flora and fauna. Lush forests, a variety of wild orchid species and various lighthouses are reminiscent of bygone times. These include the Torre del Cala Casset and the Cap de Raybay lighthouse built by the Moorish pirate, as well as a former watchtower that serves as a guide for pedestrians.

The former Trappist monastery of La Trapa can be reached in about an hour’s walk along the old smugglers and pastoral paths. Signposts are available everywhere. Sant Elm is also a station on the GR 221 long-distance hiking trail, known as the Dry Stone Route, which runs north of Port d’Andratx to Poland.

If you are interested in nature and animals, you should take a boat trip to the natural park of the island of Dragonera. To reach it by private boat, a special permit is required, but regular crossings depart from San Telmo, Port Andratx and other nearby coastal towns. The island can only be explored on foot. Many birds, sea creatures and the famous lizards can be seen roaming the island. Diving tours in the marine reserve Sa Dragonera, are also offered.

Water sports enthusiasts can also book courses, snorkeling trips, and boat trips at the local diving school Scuba Activa. If you want to explore the water world on your own, you can also rent the necessary equipment. Since the island of Sa Dragonera is a nature reserve, many sea creatures cavort in the water. Kayaks and stand up paddles can be rented on the beach.

Sant Elm a place with history

San Telmo has also been known in recent history as a place for pirates, smugglers and fishermen. In this context, the island of Dragonera also played a  prominent role. If you find the time, you should take a boat trip to the protected island and learn more about the eventful history in this area.

Before his time as a smuggling stronghold, King Jaume had gathered his fleet of ships off the westernmost town of Mallorca in the 13th century (before landing in Santa Ponsa) to fight against the Moors.
