From traditional Mallorcan to Mallorcan glamour: Mallorca’s beautiful south-west

Because of the rich diversity in this area, it is full of possibilities. For water sports fans, boat lovers can set sail from one of the many ports. If you don’t own a sailing or motor yacht, you can charter one, in Port d’Andratx or at other local ports. Or for a more sporty option climb on a SUP board and glide over the deep blue Mediterranean sea. Or why not try a canoe to discover the many small bays. One of the most fascinating diving areas in Mallorca is in the south-west with its marine nature reserve, the island of Dragonera is an experience in itself. The underwater world there presents an amazing variety of species: from dolphins, groupers, squid and dentex to fairytale-like anemones or sea snails in orange-blue neon colours.

All good things come in six

There is plenty for golf enthusiasts to enjoy in the southwest too. Whether in Andratx, at the T Golf & Country Club, on one of  the three courses in Santa Ponça or in Bendinat – you can tee off on any of the  six courses. Bendinat offers a special historical view you can appreciate from the golf course. Here you can admire the 19th century Bendinat castle. There is a legend surrounding the origin of the name. King Jaime I is said to have taken a break from the Moors in 1229 and eaten garlic bread soup at the site of today’s building when Mallorca was conquered. Extremely satisfied with the meal, he exclaimed: “Ben dinat” (“Well fed!”). This is where the name Bendinat is said to have originated from. 

Speaking of eating well. There are plenty of opportunities to do this, especially in the south-west of Mallorca. Numerous good restaurants and stylish cafés invite you to relax and enjoy. Whether on the waterfront in Portals Nous and Port d’Andratx or in quaint village bars in Banyalbufar, guests can look forward to something to suit everyone‘s taste. You can find anything from fine scallops to traditional Frito mallorquín. If you like cooking and have an appetite for fresh fish, it is best to buy it directly from the fishermen in the ports.
